The other day Korea just finished researching it, but China has already put it into production…. Tiny BV100 battery.
A Chinese company called Betavolt New Energy Technology has developed a tiny BV100 battery , about the size of a US dollar. But what makes it special is that it uses nuclear power and has a lifespan of up to 50 years. It can be used without charging.
The working principle is that inside this tiny battery is a radioactive element called nickel-63, which is an unstable isotope of nickel. It decays by emitting beta radiation, which is a relatively low-energy electron, in very small quantities. This element will gradually decay naturally and release energy steadily.

The battery also uses very thin synthetic diamond plates that are sandwiched between nickel-63 plates. The diamond plates act like solar panels, but instead of capturing sunlight, they capture energy from the breakdown of nickel-63 and convert it directly into electricity, a technology called betavoltaic.
The company claims that it is very safe because it uses only a small amount of radioactive elements and that this type of decay does not release dangerous radiation like nuclear power plants. When the nickel-63 gradually decays, it will turn into ordinary copper, unlike chemical batteries which become hazardous waste when they expire and must be properly recycled.

The current model (BV1oo) has a low power draw of 3V, which is not enough for direct use in smartphones or laptops. However, the company says that multiple batteries can be connected to increase power, making it suitable for low-power devices that need to operate for a long time, such as sensors or small medical devices.

The company plans to launch a more powerful 1-watt version later this year, which, if successful, will open up a wider range of applications, such as:
- Drones can fly continuously for days or months without having to land to recharge their batteries.
- Implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers, are inserted once and last for the patient’s entire life, eliminating the need for frequent battery replacement surgeries.
- Smartphones/portable devices, which may not be able to replace the original battery immediately, but may be used as a backup power source or used with devices that do not require frequent charging.
- Tiny robots, remote sensors, AI devices, and spacecraft systems require a reliable and long-lasting power source.
