The Death of the ‘Repetitive Bot’

For years, the battle against Sybil attacks—where a single actor creates a multitude of fake identities to subvert a system—was a game of detecting bot-like behavior. If a thousand accounts moved in perfect synchronization or used the same rigid script, security systems could easily flag them as malicious.

However, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally dismantling these traditional defenses. In an interview with Bitcoin.com News focused on the evolving threat landscape, Paolo D’Amico, senior staff product engineer at Tools for Humanity, outlined how AI has transitioned from a technical tool to a sophisticated “force multiplier” for digital attackers.

In the past, executing a Sybil attack at scale required significant technical overhead to ensure the “clones” appeared distinct. According to D’Amico, AI has lowered this barrier to entry by automating the creation of credible personas.

“AI makes that automation both easier to deploy and more convincing in practice,” D’Amico notes. “It expands an attacker’s ability to generate realistic behavior, adapt dynamically, and bypass existing security controls.”

Unlike traditional bots that follow static code, AI-driven agents can generate unique social media posts, engage in varied onchain transactions, and mimic the “jitter” of human timing. This dynamic adaptation makes it nearly impossible for legacy security systems to identify a cluster of accounts as being controlled by a single entity.

Perhaps the most significant shift D’Amico identifies is a fundamental change in how we perceive automated traffic. Historically, security teams operated under a simple criterion: Automated traffic is bad; human traffic is good. Yet, as we move toward an era of decentralized AI agents that perform legitimate tasks, that binary is breaking down.

“Agents are providing a new interface for interacting online, which makes it harder to distinguish harmful automation from legitimate or desired automated activity,” D’Amico explains. “As a result, sites now need to adapt their defenses for a world where automation itself is no longer a reliable signal of abuse.”

Is CAPTCHA Dead?

If AI can solve puzzles and mimic human browsing patterns, the question arises: Is the traditional CAPTCHA dead? According to D’Amico, these tools are not necessarily disappearing, but they are undergoing a radical evolution.

Relying on simple puzzles is becoming a game that AI is increasingly winning. Instead, robust solutions must move toward fundamentally representing a human better in the digital world. D’Amico points to emerging standards like those from the Privacy Pass working group as a glimpse into a future where “human-in-the-loop” actions are verified through deeper technological layers.

To combat the threat of a Sybil swarm of autonomous agents, new infrastructure is emerging that prioritizes verified uniqueness. One such solution is Agentkit, an SDK based on the World ID Protocol.

By integrating Agentkit, websites can gate, limit, or control access to content based on rules set for World ID credentials. The most immediate application is rate limiting based on unique humans. For instance, a platform could allow each verified person a set number of requests within a specific timeframe, effectively neutralizing the advantage of mass-produced bot accounts.

According to D’Amico, World ID introduces a security layer where scaling Sybil attacks becomes significantly more difficult. In this ecosystem, an attacker can no longer gain a new identity simply by providing a new email address or phone number. To the system, you must be a new person. This shift is anchored by the Orb—a sophisticated piece of trusted hardware—and the use of zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography, ensuring uniqueness is verified without compromising individual privacy.

As the economy of autonomous agents grows, the challenge moves from mere identification to authorization. New protocols like x402 enable agents to pay for web resources directly. However, the critical security question remains: How do we know an agent is spending on behalf of a human rather than acting as a rogue script?

The Regulatory Horizon: Privacy as a Foundation

D’Amico explains that the integration of x402 and Agentkit provides a “power of attorney” model for the digital age. While x402 handles the payment mechanism, Agentkit verifies the authority behind the request.

“Through AgentKit, a user can delegate presenting their proof of human to an agent,” D’Amico says. “In that model, a World ID can have multiple authorized keys that are allowed to generate proofs. One key belongs to the user’s device, and the user can also authorize an agent key through AgentKit.”

This means that when an agent makes a payment via x402, it carries a cryptographic signature proving it was explicitly authorized by a verified human. Crucially, this authority is limited: The agent can act within its granted permissions, but it cannot alter the user’s World ID or seize control of the identity more broadly.

As these technologies push the boundaries of digital identity, they do not exist in a vacuum. The path forward for innovation is closely tied to the shifting sands of global regulation. D’Amico views the evolution of regulatory frameworks not as a hindrance, but as an essential companion to technological growth.

“As AI continues to advance, we expect regulatory frameworks around identity and privacy to evolve in conjunction with the technology,” D’Amico observes. “These advances will reshape the landscape, opening new opportunities while also introducing new risks and attack vectors.”

Looking toward the next five years, D’Amico projects that identity management will shift from a peripheral security feature to a central pillar of the internet. In an “AI-native” world, the definition of identity must expand to cover both the creator and the emissary.

“For humans, that means stronger verifiable trust anchors that allow identity to remain a reliable representation of a real person online,” D’Amico predicts. “In parallel, I expect identity frameworks for autonomous agents to become more important.”

As agents begin to interact with financial systems and platforms in more meaningful ways, the industry will require clearer ways to verify who or what they represent, the extent of their authority, and whether they are acting on behalf of a real user.

Chairman Michael Selig, sworn in roughly 100 days before the hearing, testified that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has authorized the use of Microsoft 365 Copilot across its workforce and is building new AI-driven surveillance systems to flag fraud, market manipulation, and insider trading. Selig repeated a zero tolerance policy on insider trading throughout the hearing but declined to confirm or deny whether the CFTC is investigating any specific trades, saying doing so could compromise active investigations. He said the agency’s enforcement division, led by David Miller, a former CIA officer and Southern District of New York prosecutor, is actively staffing up.

On digital assets, Selig expressed strong support for the CLARITY Act, bipartisan crypto market structure legislation this committee has advanced. Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia raised concerns about decentralized exchange ( DEX) platforms such as Hyperliquid, which lists perpetual contracts on crude oil without segregated funds, market surveillance, or U.S. oversight. Scott said volumes on those platforms may reach 200,000 orders per second and could be affecting domestic gasoline prices. Selig said the CFTC is monitoring those offshore markets and wants to bring that activity back under domestic regulation.

Selig told the committee the agency has also taken steps to clarify the capital treatment of payment stablecoins, issued guidance on tokenized collateral, and outlined obligations for U.S.-based software developers building on blockchain infrastructure. He called legislation the only way to lock in those protections long-term against future administrative reversals.

The hearing also covered rising fertilizer prices, concerns about 24-hour trading models for agricultural commodity contracts, the CFTC whistleblower fund’s funding stability, and a push by multiple members to codify existing no-action letters that protect church pension plans and university endowments from commodity pool operator registration requirements.

Committee Chairman GT Thompson of Pennsylvania closed by saying he and Craig will send a letter to the White House urging the prompt nomination of qualified individuals to fill all four vacant commissioner seats on a bipartisan basis. The hearing record will remain open for 10 days.

According to Gregory Raymond, co-founder of The Big Whale, the French National Assembly passed an article establishing that funds held in self-hosted wallets, meaning that they are not connected to any public institution, should be disclosed to the DGFIP, France’s national tax watchdog, when they account for over 5,000 € ($5,847 at the time of writing).

Deputy Daniel Labaronne opposed the inclusion of this article in the law, arguing it would be impossible for the DGFIP to ascertain the ownership of these assets. “Likewise, how could it verify whether an individual owns a piano in their home?” he asked. Nonetheless, the motion to suppress the article was defeated.

The measure, framed as another move to fight tax fraud, was taken against the DGFIP and the French government recommendation, as the agency acknowledged that it had no tools to verify the data provided by contributors.

The DGFIP warned about the effects of such a measure on the security of French citizens, as the country is a hotbed for wrench attacks targeting crypto holders. In an email, the agency stated:

“It should be noted that a generalized declaration of these portfolios would lead to the centralization of highly sensitive data, such as the identities of the holders and the value of their assets.”

In this regard, it was ratified that “in a context of frequent cyberattacks against large databases, this information would become a prime target for hackers, entailing heightened risks of fraud.”

If finally passed, all funds held in wallets like Metamask, Phantom, and even in hardware devices like Ledger wallets will have to be disclosed by crypto holders. Nonetheless, Raymond stressed that the measure has a low chance of passing as is, as the government is hostile to it.

As @biancoresearch noted, Bitcoin is currently heavily correlated to software.
Like many who have bet heavily on software and crypto, @CathieDWood is not having a good time. She’s getting rekt, down 38% in five years while the Nasdaq has doubled. Crypto stocks in general are not doing well year-to-date:

CRCL down 28%
BMNR down 27%
MSTR down 19%
NAKA is down a staggering 99.26% from July.
Meanwhile, looking at global equities, Asian stocks are crushing US stocks so far this year, while the US market is exhibiting some seriously DotCom-esque activity. That said, @McClellanOsc just put out a contrarian bottom call on the tech sector. Also, the “dollar doomers” are in shambles after Russia proposed a return to the dollar system.

PRIVACY AS THE MODERN ‘BANK ACCOUNT’
The resurgence of privacy-centric assets, which began in the final quarter of 2025, shows no signs of slowing—at least for Monero ( XMR) and, to a lesser extent, Zcash (ZEC). That rally saw both coins finish the year as the top performers, with ZEC leading. However, since the start of 2026, XMR appears to have seized the initiative, breaking past its previous peak and setting a new all-time high.

Analysts suggest that, if the strong price action in early 2026 is any indication, privacy coins are poised to dominate once again. Should this trend continue, it would reinforce the narrative that investor sentiment is shifting decisively toward on-chain anonymity.

Yet as crypto becomes part of everyday life, wallets are evolving beyond speculative trading into primary digital bank accounts. Sonny Liu, CMO at Mixin, argues that privacy is essential for this transition. Without it, every transaction permanently exposes a user’s financial history and behavioral patterns.

Liu notes that while the first era of privacy coins focused on untraceable value transfer, the next phase is about selective disclosure.

“From a broader perspective, this evolution is inevitable. Crypto is moving from a fully transparent value ledger toward a private yet verifiable digital infrastructure. In 2026, the most resilient privacy projects will not be those pursuing extreme anonymity in isolation, but those embedding privacy as a foundational capability—protecting user boundaries while remaining compatible with compliance, finance, and data needs. Privacy is no longer a confrontational feature; it is becoming core infrastructure for Web3.”

Products like Mixin Messenger, he adds, demonstrate how “secrets-as-a-service” can move privacy beyond hiding money to protecting everything that matters in a digital society.

Still, with 2026 shaping up as the year of the “compliance contest,” some fear privacy coins will struggle to uphold their ethos of anonymity under pressure from fiat off-ramps eager to comply with AML and KYC standards. Liu agrees that privacy and compliance are not inherently at odds. The real tension, he argues, arises when compliance relies on indiscriminate data collection and centralized surveillance. Regulators, he says, need verifiable assurances that rules are followed—not total visibility into every user’s activity. Compliance should occur at the interface layer while protocols remain neutral, permissionless and privacy-preserving.

REGULATORY HEADWINDS: DAC8 AND REGIONAL BANS
The European Union (EU)’s Directive on Administrative Cooperation ( DCA)8, effective Jan. 1, 2026, requires crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) to report detailed transaction data, user identities and tax IDs for EU users. This poses challenges for CASPs, which cannot accurately report privacy coin transactions. As a result, some may delist or restrict them. Liu warns that DAC8 could temporarily weaken the “herd effect” that strengthens obfuscation in Monero and Zcash.

Nevertheless, like other experts, Liu predicts that demand for privacy will push users toward decentralized exchanges, Layer 2 protocols and self-custody tools. Over time, anonymity sets are expected to evolve from fragile reliance on centralized on-ramps into robust, censorship-resistant networks of decentralized pools.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s recent move formalize a ban on privacy coins has raised concerns about a global precedent. Yet, both Liu and Kabra argue the move is not a wholesale rejection and unlikely to trigger worldwide bans.

“This is not a signal flare for global follow-through, but a localized storm,” Liu explains. “Global hubs will respond selectively to FATF pressures, but not collectively march toward full bans. The rigid demand for privacy will ensure it survives and evolves in dispersed ecosystems.”

Kabra concludes that the path forward lies in building privacy-first infrastructure that regulators can trust and users can control. Protocols that strike this balance, he says, will attract both individuals and institutions.
