In a recent video published on TDLR, Gareth Soloway drew a direct line between today’s stock market and conditions in 2000. The Nasdaq just pierced 25,000, he noted to host David Lin, the same way it pierced 5,000 before it topped out. He called the current environment a late-stage bull market, one where a handful of names carry the index while sectors like software are already down 20% year-to-date.

The IGF expanded tech software exchange-traded fund (ETF) illustrates the point, Soloway noted. Despite the index sitting at all-time highs, that ETF has shed roughly a fifth of its value in 2026, a divergence Soloway says traders should not ignore.

He remains short the S&P 500, though he is legging in gradually rather than committing all at once. His first downside target is former all-time high resistance, which now becomes technical support. A deeper flush could eventually bring the index back to the midpoint of its parallel channel from COVID lows.

On the economy, Soloway pushed his recession call out to 2027. He credited $700 billion in annual AI capital spending from companies like Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft for keeping growth alive. Jerome Powell himself acknowledged at the most recent FOMC meeting that data center buildout has been a primary driver of the economy. When those companies pull back their spend, Soloway remarked, that is when the recession hits.

Inflation, he told Lin, is a two-part problem. The spike tied to oil prices above $100 a barrel will likely prove temporary, with political pressure ahead of the midterms pushing the president to bring prices down. But long-term inflation, already running around 2.7%, could settle in the 3 to 4% range given government spending running at roughly $1 trillion in new debt every quarter.

On gold, Soloway said he is trading it like a risk asset because that is what it has become. He is neutral on short-term swings and is watching $3,900 as first major support, with $3,500 coming into play only if the Nasdaq drops 20% or more. His long-term view remains bullish. He told Lin that five years from now, gold is much higher.

Bitcoin is where Soloway’s outlook has shifted most. He was bullish on his last TDLR appearance. Now he is neutral at best and bearish on a directional basis. The consolidation pattern between $80,000 and $85,000 is a bear flag, he stressed, similar to one that resolved lower earlier in the cycle. Unless bitcoin clears $85,000, his next downside target is $50,000, a drop of roughly 38%.

Soloway pointed to structural headwinds for crypto. The administration’s handling of coin launches, what he described as rug-pull-style activity, and damaged trust. The CLARITY Act moving through Congress offers little clear upside. And investors who might have parked capital in bitcoin are instead chasing semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure plays.

The 10-year Treasury yield hovering near 4.5% is the signal the bond market is not giving the all-clear, Soloway explained during the interview. The stock market, driven by retail inflows and index momentum, is ignoring it. That divergence is one more reason he is adding to short positions on the S&P and the Nasdaq.

Natural gas is the one trade he is willing to step up on. A breakout above $2.88 could draw capital that rotates out of oil. Data centers need power, nuclear is not ready, and natural gas is cheap relative to oil. That combination, Soloway told Lin, makes it the most attractive near-term position outside of cash and selective shorts.

Asked which falls first, bitcoin or stocks, Soloway detailed that stocks are more overdue for a drop, but if the Nasdaq keeps sliding, bitcoin investors will panic and the cryptocurrency will play catch-up fast.

Roblox shares plummeted 18% on Friday after the company reported first-quarter earnings as its new child safety measures weighed on bookings.

“Part of what we’re rolling out with age check, we believe, is the real, right long-term way to build this platform,” CEO David Baszucki said Friday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

In a letter to shareholders, the gaming company wrote that its new age-check feature “restricted on-platform communication for non-age checked users, diluted communication for age-checked users, and slowed new user acquisition,” causing greater-than-expected headwinds.

In January, the company restricted its chat feature to users who completed its age-check verification. According to the company, 73% of age-checked daily active users on Roblox were under 18, with 35% under 13 as of Jan. 31.

To account for the slowed growth, Roblox slashed its full-year 2026 guidance.

The company updated its full-year 2026 bookings to fall between $7.33 billion and $7.6 billion. It forecasted 2026 bookings to be almost $1 billion higher last quarter, falling between $8.28 billion and $8.55 billion.

Roblox’s first-quarter results beat Wall Street’s estimates, with a loss of 35 cents per share beating the estimated loss of 41 cents per share. It reported $1.73 billion in revenue for the quarter, narrowly beating analysts’ estimates of $1.72 billion.

Roblox is facing over 140 lawsuits in U.S. Federal Court accusing the company of failing to protect children from sexual exploitation, according to Reuters. Last month, the company reached settlements with Alabama and West Virginia, agreeing to pay out a combined $23.2 million.

The company announced new account types for younger age groups last month, as well as expanded parental controls.

Bitcoin’s recent price gains appear to be a “speculative rally” rather than fundamental buying support, increasing the risk of a correction, according to onchain analytics firm CryptoQuant.

Bitcoin rose about 20% in April, from around $66,000 to as high as $79,000. However, this rally was driven mainly by growth in perpetual futures demand, while spot demand remained negative throughout the period, CryptoQuant said.

“Perpetual futures demand was the sole driver of bitcoin’s April price rally, while spot apparent demand contracted throughout, a configuration historically associated with unsustained price gains during bear markets,” CryptoQuant’s head of research, Julio Moreno, wrote in a report.

This divergence, with rising futures demand alongside contracting spot demand, is one of the clearest onchain signals that the rally is speculative rather than structural, Moreno said, noting that it suggests the price rise is driven by leverage rather than fresh bitcoin accumulation.

“Historically, such configurations lack the structural foundation required to sustain price gains and typically resolve via correction once futures positioning unwinds,” Moreno said.

Mirroring the pattern of the 2022 bear market?

CryptoQuant said the current demand pattern driven by perpetual futures is similar to what was seen at the start of the 2022 bear market, noting that while this does not guarantee the same outcome this time, the current structure carries “meaningful downside risk.”

The divergence suggests that the rally is “not sustainable” and that sustained price rallies during a bull market coincide with demand growth. “Without a reversal in apparent demand from negative to positive, rallies back toward the $79,000 local peak will lack the onchain support needed for a sustained breakout,” the firm said.

The CryptoQuant Bull Score Index also declined from 50 to 40 in April, returning to bearish territory below the neutral threshold, the firm said, noting that this confirms onchain fundamentals deteriorated after the recent speculative futures-driven price rally.

“The Bull Score of returning back to 40 indicates conditions are ‘getting bearish’ and places the market in the same range that historically preceded continued price weakness,” the firm concluded. The CryptoQuant Bull Score Index aggregates multiple onchain and market indicators into a 0–100 scale. A score above 50 indicates bullish conditions and below 50 indicates bearish conditions.

The global memory crisis played an outsized role in tech earnings season, which hit an apex this week. Apple CEO Tim Cook warned it’s just the beginning.

“We believe memory costs will drive an increasing impact on our business,” Cook said in the Q&A portion of his company’s earnings call on Thursday after repeatedly telling analysts that the company faced “supply constraints” in the latest quarter. “We’ll continue to evaluate this.”

Apple’s earnings report, which included an almost across-the-board beat and better-than-expected revenue guidance, came a day after Meta and Microsoft said in their results that higher memory prices contributed to their elevated forecasts for capital expenditures for the year.

In projecting $190 billion in capex for 2026, up 61% from last year, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said on a conference call that she anticipates a $25 billion impact from higher component prices. Meta noted that “expectations for higher component pricing” contributed to its capex forecast increasing from a high of $135 billion to as much as $145 billion.

Across the tech landscape, executives have been voicing their concerns about soaring prices for memory, which faces a worldwide crunch due to insatiable demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Each generation of Nvidia chip, the processor at the heart of the AI boom, packs in more memory, further constricting an already stressed market.

Memory maker Micron, whose stock is up roughly 570% in the past year, has been working to add capacity, as have competitors Samsung and SK Hynix. With AI chips and data centers sucking up so much supply, memory for consumer devices like PCs and smartphones is increasingly scarce, and thus much more expensive.

That’s why it was such a big topic on Apple’s call.

Cook said Apple’s revenue growth of 17% for the fiscal second quarter exceeded its guidance “despite supply constraints.”

He said the impact in the December quarter was “minimal” and that there was a bit more of a hit in the March period. For the quarter that ends in June, Cook said the big impact will be on several Mac models “given the continued high levels of demand that we’re seeing.”

Analysts wanted to know what Apple was going to do in response, but they didn’t get much by way of specifics. Cook said on a couple occasions, “We″ll look at a range of options.”

Since January, when AI memory began selling out, Wall Street has been asking consumer electronics companies like Apple and Dell how they will handle the memory shortage, and if they might be forced to raise prices or cut margins.

“Apple showed that even the best operators can’t fully escape the memory squeeze,” said Jake Behan, head of capital markets at Direxion. “Tim Cook’s warning of ‘significantly higher’ costs in the coming quarters tells you how real the AI-driven supply crunch has become for the entire industry.”

Apple has so far largely avoided price hikes. In March, the company announced a number of new products, including its iPhone 17e, a refreshed iPad Air laptop with an M4 chip in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. It also unveiled the MacBook Neo, a low-cost laptop that Cook admitted had even higher demand than he expected.

The memory conundrum will soon fall in the lap of incoming CEO John Ternus, Apple’s longtime hardware boss who is succeeding Cook at the help in September.

Eat the costs?

William Kerwin, an analyst at Morningstar, told CNBC in an email that one option for Apple would be to enter into longer-term supply agreements to secure more favorable pricing. He noted that memory maker Sandisk discussed “numerous new agreements just like this” in its earnings call on Thursday.

Needham analyst Laura Martin said that while she doesn’t know what Cook was referring to in suggesting the company would consider options, it’s not great to see capacity constraints “for a company with a core competence in hardware.”

Wall Street took the news in stride, reacting positively to Apple’s forecast for revenue growth this quarter of 14% to 17%, and sending the stock higher. Analysts were expecting growth of 9.5% to $103 billion, according to LSEG.

Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, told CNBC that Apple has been able to avoid hiking iPhone prices but that “arrangements with memory suppliers may have to change.” He said some options for Apple would be to reduce the memory available in products, increase the price of handsets, or eat some of the extra cost and absorb lower gross margins.

IDC analyst Nabila Popal said the range of options could relate to increased prices for iPhones, but they won’t necessarily be distributed evenly across all models.

“I think they will focus price increases on the Pro/Max while keeping the base model the same in the following Spring,” she said by email.

Some analysts said the memory crunch represents an opportunity for Apple to gain market share this year as other manufacturers face even greater challenges.

Morningstar’s Kerwin said, regarding the latest results, that he’s “impressed with Apple’s profitability amidst immense memory pricing inflation.”

Behan from Direxion echoed the sentiment that Apple is better positioned than just about anyone.

“Apple’s scale, balance‑sheet strength, and relatively conservative approach to capex will likely give it more flexibility than most to navigate these constraints over time,” he said.

MARA Holdings, Inc. signed a definitive agreement on Thursday in order to acquire Long Ridge Energy & Power LLC from FTAI Infrastructure Inc. (Nasdaq: FIP) for approximately $1.5 billion, adding a 505 MW natural gas power plant and more than 1,600 acres in Hannibal, Ohio.

MARA Holdings Locks In $1.5 Billion Deal for Ohio Power Plant to Build AI Data Center Campus

The deal gives MARA (Nasdaq: MARA) direct ownership of a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility on the Ohio River in PJM Interconnection territory, one of the most active power markets in North America for data center development.

MARA already operates a 200 MW co-located data center on the Long Ridge site. The acquisition pushes the company’s total owned and operated power capacity to approximately 2.2 GW across PJM, ERCOT, SPP, and international markets, a roughly 65% increase.

Long Ridge’s assets include around 100 million cubic feet per day of vertically integrated natural gas supply, water rights, fiber connectivity, and rail infrastructure. All-in operating costs for the plant run below $15 per megawatt-hour, with long-dated hedges supporting stable cash flows.

MARA explained that the site can scale to more than 1 GW of total potential power capacity. The company plans to begin construction of initial AI and critical IT capacity in the first half of 2027, targeting service delivery by mid-2028.

The transaction adds approximately $144 million in annualized adjusted EBITDA based on Long Ridge’s second-half 2025 performance. MARA will assume at least $785 million of existing debt, backstopped by a 364-day senior secured bridge loan from Barclays. The equity portion will be funded through cash on hand and bitcoin-backed financing.

FTAI will use net proceeds to repay approximately $300 million in parent-level corporate debt after settling roughly $1.16 billion in Long Ridge project-level debt. The Pittsburgh-based company said it plans to redirect capital toward its freight rail and terminals businesses.

MARA disclosed that it has already received inbound interest from investment-grade tenants for long-term AI and high-performance computing leases on the site. The company also plans to continue flexible Bitcoin mining operations and wholesale power sales through PJM.

FTAI developed Long Ridge from a brownfield project nearly a decade ago. The plant uses a GE 7HA.02 turbine and is hydrogen-blend capable, with commercial operations beginning around 2021.

MARA plans to retain Long Ridge’s operating team. The $75 million reverse termination fee applies in certain deal-break scenarios, and the transaction includes an indemnification agreement covering regulatory, legal, and maintenance matters.

The announcement noted that closing is expected in the third quarter of 2026, pending Hart-Scott-Rodino Act clearance, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approval, and other standard conditions.

Fast-rising gas prices lifted the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge to 3.5% in March, its highest rate in almost three years, new data showed Thursday.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index rose 0.7% from February, a faster-than-expected acceleration from the previous monthly pace of 0.4%, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The annual rate of inflation, which jumped from 2.8% in February, is now running at its fastest pace since May 2023.

Economists were expecting the price index to rise 0.6% from the month before and 3.6% on an annual basis, according to FactSet.

The PCE Price Index is the inflation gauge the Federal Reserve uses for its 2% target rate.

The US-Israeli war against Iran, which is now entering its ninth week, has sent shockwaves through the global economy. Shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz has slowed to a trickle, choking off a vital waterway for the trade of oil, natural gas, fertilizer and other critical materials.

The sharp hike in energy prices, an aftershock of the Middle East conflict’s squeeze on the oil trade, was largely responsible for the sudden jump in inflation.

When excluding food and energy costs, prices rose 0.3% from February and 3.2% on an annual basis. That’s in line with what economists were expecting.

In addition to the PCE price index, which the Federal Reserve uses for its 2% inflation target, Thursday’s Commerce Department report also provided a look at how households’ spending, income and savings were holding up.

Consumer spending jumped 0.9% from February, but when taking inflation into account, it rose just 0.2%.

A global task force led by the FBI has arrested 276 suspects and disrupted nine scam centers used for crypto investment schemes, officials announced Wednesday.

The FBI, working with police in Dubai, Thailand, and China, targeted international fraud rings that operated so-called “pig butchering” schemes, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Dubai police arrested 275 individuals, with three charged in the Southern District of California on counts of wire fraud and money laundering. Thai authorities also arrested one suspect.

The investigation began last year after FBI agents in San Diego identified multiple suspects and entities allegedly running crypto scam compounds. According to the statement, the group recruited individuals to work for three companies — Ko Thet Company, Sanduo Group, and Giant Company — which the authorities said functioned as scam centers.

The schemes followed a typical “pig butchering” model, where scammers build trust with victims over time before convincing them to invest in fraudulent crypto opportunities.

Specifically, the suspects allegedly targeted victims in the U.S. and other countries by promoting fictitious crypto investment returns. Victims’ funds were funneled through fraudulent platforms and transferred to accounts held by the scammers, who then laundered the proceeds through additional crypto wallets, according to the statement.

Rampant cross-border fraud

The authorities said investigators have identified “millions of dollars” in losses linked to these cross-border crypto investment schemes.

“Fraudsters who target Americans from overseas cannot operate with impunity, no matter where in the world they reside,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Scam center organizers and fraudsters who defraud Americans and others will face justice in American courts and in courts around the world.”

“These scammers thought they were safe half a world away,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon for the Southern District of California. “But their world has changed. Global crime now faces global justice.”

Crypto-related fraud has been on the rise, with losses hitting a record $11.3 billion last year, accounting for more than half of the $20.9 billion in total internet crime losses tracked by the FBI, according to a report released earlier this month.

Visa added five blockchains to its global stablecoin settlement pilot, bringing the total supported networks to nine as the company’s annualized settlement run rate surged 50% since last quarter to $7 billion, the payments giant announced on Wednesday.

The expansion introduces support for five additional blockchains, including Arc, Base, Canton, Polygon, and Tempo, according to a statement. These networks join Visa’s existing infrastructure for Avalanche, Ethereum, Solana, and Stellar.

Per the statement, the broader multi-chain rollout builds on Visa’s effort to standardize settlement across fragmented blockchain networks while maintaining a single infrastructure layer for partners.

Visa’s stablecoin settlement pilots have been active across Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Asia Pacific, Central Europe, the Middle East, and Africa for several years. The company recently expanded USDC settlement to U.S. banks and now supports more than 130 stablecoin-linked card programs across more than 50 countries, Visa said.

Analysts remain bullish on Visa’s strategy

Visa’s latest expansion comes as analysts at William Blair reiterated an “outperform” rating on the stock, citing what they described as underappreciated contributions from stablecoins, agentic commerce, and Visa’s broader value-added services portfolio.

In a note to clients, the analysts led by Andrew Jeffrey said Visa remains positioned to capture incremental volume from stablecoin-based B2B settlement, framing current activity as a small but expanding component of the company’s broader payments network.

The note also highlighted Visa’s engagement in emerging payment architectures, including agent-driven commerce and interoperability initiatives tied to digital currency frameworks in Europe.

The analysts pointed to continued development of digital euro-related infrastructure as a potential medium-term regulatory overhang, while noting Visa has pursued interoperability tools designed to connect central bank digital currency systems with existing payment rails.

Of note, Visa also said Tuesday it is partnering with “on-chain banking” firm WeFi to enable crypto payments using infrastructure that lets consumers maintain control of their crypto.

The European Commission has found that Meta breached EU law by failing to prevent under-13s from accessing its platforms, as scrutiny of the tech giant’s handling of child safety intensifies.

The commission said Wednesday that its preliminary investigations concluded that Meta violated the EU’s Digital Services Act because the minimum age requirement of 13 for Instagram and Facebook is not adequately enforced.

When creating an account, minors can input a false birth date, with no controls in place to verify it, the Commission said.

Additionally, the tool for reporting a minor’s account is “difficult to use” and requires up to seven clicks to access the form, the commission said. Even when a minor’s account is reported, the commission found that there are often no adequate follow ups or measures to get them off the platform.

“The Commission considers that Instagram and Facebook must change their risk assessment methodology, in order to evaluate which risks arise on Instagram and Facebook in the European Union, and how they manifest,” the commission said in its announcement.

A Meta spokesperson told CNBC: “We disagree with these preliminary findings. We’re clear that Instagram and Facebook are intended for people aged 13 and older and we have measures in place to detect and remove accounts from anyone under that age.

“We continue to invest in technologies to find and remove underage users and will have more to share next week about additional measures rolling out soon. Understanding age is an industry-wide challenge, which requires an industry-wide solution, and we will continue to engage constructively with the European Commission on this important issue.”

Meta can now review the Commission’s preliminary investigation findings and respond in writing.

If the commission’s preliminary findings are confirmed by its final investigation, it can fine Meta up to 6% of its total worldwide annual turnover.

The commission’s preliminary findings come after two high-profile U.S. court rulings in March: one found that aspects of its platform design contributed to addiction and mental health harms among teenagers, while the other concluded that the company misled users about children’s safety on its platforms.

Galaxy Digital posted a $216 million net loss in the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by declining crypto prices that weighed on its balance sheet.

CEO Mike Novogratz appeared unfazed, attributing the losses to an industry that is in a transition phase.

“For digital assets, this is a transition year — globally, we’re moving from a speculative asset class, the ‘crypto casino,’ some would call it, to a technology that will be embedded across industries worldwide,” he said on the company’s earnings call.

The crypto market cap slid roughly 21% last quarter, contributing to unrealized losses across Galaxy’s treasury and investments.

Despite this market-wide decline, Galaxy (GLXY) reported flat trading volumes, something Novogratz said marked “the first time we’ve really started to see a decoupling of our business from the price.”

Shares of GLXY were trading around $25.30 on Tuesday, a margional 1% gain on the day according to The Block’s crypto stock data.

Data center outlook

Novogratz harped on Galaxy’s growing data center business as being key to offsetting crypto market volatility, saying he remains “bullish on both our data centers and digital assets platforms.”

The firm recently delivered its first data hall at its Helios campus in West Texas under its lease agreement with CoreWeave, which is expected to generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue across the full buildout.

Executives see the milestone as a turning point for the business, calling it “the single most important de-risking event this business has experienced.”

Galaxy expects revenue from its data center segment, which it sees as insulated from crypto price swings, to begin ramping in the second quarter.

Rewiring capital markets

Meanwhile, Galaxy’s Digital Assets segment generated $49 million in adjusted gross profit during the bearish quarter, just barely falling short of the $51 million seen the quarter prior.

“If I could see that four quarters in a row, I’d have a big grin on my face,” Novogratz said.

Galaxy also flagged growing institutional demand for blockchain infrastructure, including custody, trading, and tokenization, noting that “the entirety of the capital markets … ultimately needs to be rewired.”

Executives said that over time, the firm’s performance should be less and less tied to crypto price swings and more dependent on usage of its platform.
